Urgent dental problem? NHS 111

Medical Disclaimer: Information, Not Advice

Nothing on this site is personal medical or dental advice. We are not a dental clinic, and nobody here has examined you. If you have a dental problem now, contact your own dentist or call National Health Service (NHS) 111, and call 999 or go to A&E if it is hard to breathe, speak, swallow or open your mouth, or if there is a lot of swelling in your mouth, face or neck.

If you need help now

In the UK your first call is your own dentist. If you cannot reach one, including out of hours, NHS 111 can advise and help you find urgent dental care. The NHS says to call 999 or go to A&E if you find it hard to breathe, speak, swallow or open your mouth, or have a lot of swelling in the mouth, face or neck, or a swollen or painful eye, as set out on its dental abscess page. Its guidance on when to call 999 covers life-threatening emergencies more widely.

Who to call

  • Your own dentist: pain, a loose crown, a broken restoration or a tooth that stays sore.
  • NHS 111: urgent dental advice when you cannot reach a dentist.
  • 999 or A&E: difficulty breathing, speaking, swallowing or opening your mouth; a lot of swelling in the mouth, face or neck; or a swollen or painful eye or sudden problems with your eyesight.

What the NHS will and will not do for work carried out abroad, and how to find a dentist who will help, is covered in NHS care and emergencies at home.

General information only

The guides on this site are general information for people in the UK who are researching dental treatment in Turkey, starting with our Turkey teeth guide. They cannot take account of your teeth, your health, your medicines or your circumstances. A guide may describe a treatment, a risk or a charge accurately and still not apply to you. Please treat what you read here as a way to prepare better questions, not as an answer about your own mouth.

We are not a clinic

We do not provide treatment, diagnose conditions, assess photographs or X-rays, or monitor your recovery. Reading the site, or emailing us, does not create a dentist–patient relationship. We do not rank or recommend clinics or dentists, and nothing here should be read as an endorsement of one.

Fact-checked, not clinically reviewed

Our pages are written and fact-checked by an editorial team against the sources they cite. At present no General Dental Council (GDC) registered dentist reviews them, and we do not claim that they do. The reviewers page explains this, and our editorial standards describe how sources are chosen and checked. Even careful fact-checking can miss errors, and guidance and charges change, so check the date on each page.

Decisions about your treatment

Decisions about crowns, veneers, implants or any other treatment belong with you and a GDC-registered dentist who has examined you. Please do not delay seeking care, or disregard advice from your own dentist, because of something you have read here. If you are unsure whether a symptom matters, it is better to ring and ask.

Money and the law

Where we mention costs, finance or your rights as a consumer, that is general information as well. It is not financial or legal advice. We do not recommend particular finance products.
